There's a fashion phenomenon known as the "20-year rule," which has shown that historically, trends tend to come back every two decades. This is why '50s fashion was cool in the '70s (think 1978's Grease) and it's the same reason the early 2000s is back now that we're in the 2020s. But while vintage trends almost always come back, they don't necessarily return in the exact same form. Wearing flipflops outside the house, for example—something that 2010s folk would have cringed at—is acceptable again, but not in the same way it was in the aughts. Back then, rubber slippers made to be worn at home or on the beach were paired with jeans and sun dresses. And yes, let's admit it, 2000s kids: We thought it looked hella chic. These days, however, when we talk about slippers made for going out, the style is usually a more elevated form of the thong-style flipflop; more of a sandal that gets its look from the flipflop's signature silhouette. Take for example local brand Sebastian & Savannah's Tilda Slips. They're a modern-minimalist take on flipflops that have all the casual comfort of the old-school style, but with a more elegant look fit for the 2020s.

Where rubber slippers of the 2000s had a more laid-back surfer-style aesthetic to them, the trend’s resurrection in the 2020s has given birth to flipflops with a more dressed up appearance. Sebastian & Savannah’s version of the style features a leatherette exterior available in delicate tones like lilac, baby blue, and sage. The upper goes for a more curved formation compared to the slippers of the aughts, giving the shoe a daintier and more polished appearance. The straps are also stuffed with a soft foam, giving more shape and dimension to the flipflop—a small detail but one that instantly makes the design look more luxurious than a plain slipper would. If you missed the days of being able to wear flipflops outside the house (we don't judge!), these pairs let you do just that, but with a little more elegance.
