Despite Manila's heat and humidity, owning a turtleneck is a must-have closet staple. Whether you’re a frequent traveler or you simply prefer keeping yourself warm and toasty in your cold office, a well covered look featuring a smart pair of trousers and statement shoes is undeniably chic. That said, if you’re flying to some place cool this Christmas season, why not take cues from actor Ruru Madrid and get a little clever with layering?

Ruru once told us that he describes his style to be classic, retro, but with a twist—and the actor was not shy when it came to experimenting with accessories and textures during his recent trip to Tokyo, Japan. The common element in his OOTDs? The humble turtleneck—and he managed to make each look a little different compared to the next.

1. A black turtleneck adds depth to a look when layered under a simple top. Here, Ruru wears it under a classic sports shirt, then pairs it with black trousers and statement sneakers. The camel-colored jacket is an interesting addition to an otherwise duotone look.

2. A cream-colored turtleneck and trousers combo screams K-drama leading man, but we like Ruru’s own take: The platform sneaks make the entire ensemble seem a little more playful—and when you’re dressing for a Japan OOTD, we’re all for the fun.

3, When it’s cold outside, don’t be scared to pile on those jackets! We love the actor’s take on athleisure especially with his choice of colors. His red shirt echoes the crimson piping of his joggers, while the dark hues are rendered in different fabrics. The turtleneck serves as a neutral base to tie his whole look together, too!

4. There's a lot to love about the color camel. Flattering on most skin tones, this nude shade is perfect as a turtleneck. Here, Ruru matches it with a newsboy cap and does winter chic right!

5, Don’t be afraid to let your accessories stand out. The young actor loves a bit of jewelry, and in this look, his gold pendant comes front and center! Possibly his simplest look from the bunch, it also shows how throwing on a hat and a cool pair of sunglasses can easily make or break an outfit.
