One look at Acne Studios' Fall/Winter 2017 campaign (starring LGBT couple Kordale Lewis and Kaleb Anthony and their real-life family, no less!) and we fell for the rugby shirt. Or should we say it tackled us to the proverbial ground? Either way, those big, bold stripes are irreversibly seared into our sartorial minds, and we are so not complaining.
Already calling it: this is going to be everyone's comfy-cool pick for the season. After all, if Rihanna's in, we're in...
Marc Jacobs is at the rally's forefront, making a serious case for the rugby shirt's transition from stereotypical preppy to offbeat cool. Also, if you haven't read The Wall Street Journal's “Stripes Like Jagger: The Return of the Rugby Shirt” yet, you really should—it's the last piece in the puzzle and will (affirmative!) convince you to buy 10. Don't say Mick Jagger himself didn't warn you.
You can love it or hate it, but those stripes' charm lies in their subtle air of old-school subversion. Not brought up rubbing elbows with the British upper crust? No problem! This referee doesn't care about prestige, because the decision's unanimous—the rugger is back in a big way.
