Penshoppe has just revealed its second coup for the year. Fast on the heels of the Ed Westwick ad campaign is a collaboration with another New York-based individual only this time he’s Pinoy! They’ve signed a deal with designer Robin Tomas for a 16-piece capsule collection that will hit stores around January 2012
Robin, the son of comedienne Tessie Tomas, already made news last year for winning the “Best Reinvention of the T-Shirt” at the 2010 Supima design competition. (Supima is a US non-profit organization that was founded in 1954 to promote the use of American Pima cotton worldwide.) His winning t-shirt design was produced by Bloomingdales and launched in the 59th street store in March 2011.
And how did the two come together?
“We’re really in touch because we’ve known each other for a long time,” reveals Alex Mendoza, Penshoppe’s brand director. Robin shares, “Before I moved to New York I was working in advertising and Penshoppe was my client. I’ve worked with Penshoppe on that level. I’m very familiar with the brand.”
“Of course we were very happy for Robin when he won the Supima competition,” Alex adds ”and he [mentioned that he] wanted to bring it to the Philippines but of course on a larger scale since he wanted to let more people enjoy it. Since it was a t-shirt competition, what better way to bring it to the Philippines than with a brand that was built on t-shirts?”
Robin will be creating 8 styles for men and 8 styles for women. He’ll be using the winning Supima t-shirt as the starting point for his designs so there will likely be more tops than bottoms in the mix.
“I really want to have a flavor of New York in the collection without being too literal about it,” says the designer. “It will definitely have the flavor of the shirt in Bloomingdale’s. I think when I designed it and it was out I thought, ‘this has to be in the Philippines.’ It really goes well because it’s a t-shirt and it’s cotton and it’s light.”
His training in New York has made him retail-oriented; making the idea of working with one of the country’s largest retail clothing brands an easy sync. He says he’ll be infusing attitude and great quality noting that at the end of the day, we really have to think about comfort too!
