Raya On The Airwaves Raya Mananquil adds the role of Disc Jockey to her already
dynamic CV.
Raya Mananquil has already become a household name with her success as a model. Her plate has been growing increasingly full with a weekly lifestyle column for The Philippine Star and devotion as an animal rights activist occupying her schedule, but this hasn't stopped her from taking on another job.

Raya is the newest on-air talent for NU 107, and together with co-host Mark Dimalanta, she hosts The Magazine Show. The young model chats with Style Bible to tell us more about it.

Why did you decide to ad Radio DJ to your already full list of hyphenates?

Music has always been a huge passion of mine, then of course the fashion industry has been a huge part of my life. And so spawned The Magazine Show, a lifestyle talk show with music that I love, and hopefully [it's music] the listeners will enjoy too.

Is it harder to manage your schedule now?

I wouldn't say harder, but when you're not in a typical nine to five job your schedule can get erratic. There are no set hours, which can be a good or bad thing. You work on your own time, but [that] also means that it [can] creep into the wee hours of the late night.

How is it similar to your other occupations?

You have to keep your audience engaged and interested, whether I'm walking down the runway, writing a piece for the newspaper, or yapping away on the air.

How is it different?
With modeling you have to look good, as a jock you have to sound good!

Tell us about your show.

The Magazine Show is the name the producers came up with—it's simple and pretty much self-explanatory. It airs every Saturday from 12 noon to 1pm. You can also watch the live streaming webcast on

Mark, a longtime friend of mine who hails from Huntington Beach, California has moved here to Manila to be my co-host. He's such a goofball and cracks me up all the time, but he's also a smartie! Mark used to be a doctor.

What will you be talking about?
If there are magazines for fashion, health, sports, events, travel, and the like, then we're on it. We will be covering everything, except porn.

Who will you be inviting to guest?

Today, March 27, we will have models/moms/entrepreneurs, Mikaela Lagdameo-Martinez and Bianca Valerio. We plan to invite all kinds of people too in future episodes—from artists, chefs, athletes, designers, and writers.

And the music?

It will be music that Mark and I like to listen to. I personally tend to favor indie, indie rock, rock and alternative (The Strokes, Dirty Projectors, The xx, Belle & Sebastian, The Flaming Lips) especially when I'm feeling more dynamic and getting pumped up. Though if I'm feeling mellower, I like post-rock (Explosions in the Sky, Sigur Ros), folk rock (Beirut, Iron & Wine, Ray LaMontagne) and jazz soul (Jose James, Sam Cooke). I also love classic groups (The Beatles, Beach Boys, The Smiths).
