“Bakit may ulan?” I ask.
“Wala lang. Fantasy lang,” RJ Santos replies intuitively.

Fantastical references sit at the core of RJ’s philosophy as the creative director of Randolf. And like many wondrous phenomena, they often don’t have (or need) a humane explanation attached to them.

On set at the Randolf x Plains & Prints shoot, the downpour in question poured over him and brand ambassador Nadine Lustre. The two were nestled under a white umbrella, striking poses for photography duo Cenon at Mav.

Months later, RJ’s collaboration with Plains & Prints is finally set to hit stores and inhabit wardrobes. At first glance, the collection is irrevocably Randolf, with zany patterns doodled onto sheer fabrics, scalloped hems placed wherever necessary, and denim remixed with exposed stitching and pops of color. It’s a fantasy translated into a 34-piece catalogue that is sure to tickle any fashionista’s fancy.

“We've been doing so many collaborations from the past and we [wanted] something different,” Plains & Prints co-founder and creative head Roxanne Ang-Farillas tells Preview. “So we thought of Randolf bringing his pieces to life and making [them] more accessible to our clients as well.”

As a homegrown Filipino label, Plains & Prints has long been certain about the kind of person it intends to dress. With its link-up with Randolf, the brand hopes to introduce new ideas to anyone who chances upon the collection, be it in silhouette or style. “We’ve always been very distinct with our attention to detail,” Roxanne adds.

This thoroughness is something she also observed in RJ, who came to every meeting with new ideas to offer. “RJ is actually very fun to work with,” she gushes. “He’s very enthusiastic and full of energy.”

The man behind Randolf can say the same about the Plains & Prints team, who were more than receptive to the vision he had for their collection. “Gets nila 'yung vision,” he shares. “Open sila to ideas… [and] it really felt like they gave me the space to experiment and explore. Walang stress.”

When it came to designing each piece, RJ considered the elements akin to Plains & Prints and interpreted them through the signature Randolf codes, be it fabric manipulation or silhouettes.

What informed the ethos of the collection were the different women in RJ’s life, all of whom he considers an inspiration. “I just wanted to revisit Randolf’s journey from where we started to where we are now,” he expresses. “[And] I have a lot of women who inspire me. And iba-iba sila. I was just inspired by how these women are very confident, how they know what they want, and how they won’t let anything hinder [them].”

“So I made a collection that they can play around with,” RJ adds. With a variety of pieces, from polo shirts patterned after a barong to an actual contemporary barong crafted out of piña, the selection offers a little bit of everything. Each article of clothing can be mixed and matched with other offerings from the same collection, and that’s exactly how RJ envisioned it being worn in the first place.

“I wanted clothes that they can dress up and down. So they can pair it with a certain dress to make it look more formal, or pair it with jeans to make it more casual,” he illustrates. “I made the clothes more versatile in a way, para mas mapaglaruan din nila.”

Ultimately, RJ shares Plains & Prints’ belief that fashion is an avenue for self-expression and, therefore, should feed into one’s fantasies. “I just want them to see themselves wearing the clothes, and having fun with [them]. Because ultimately, I want them to feel good,” he articulates.
