Few childhood fashion moments cling to our memories like the image of Sleeping Beauty's Princess Aurora swirling around the castle ballroom in her color-changing dress. Much more than Prince Charming, it was that fairytale frock that was the absolute stuff of dreams!
It's still the ultimate goal gown, to be honest, so wait 'til you hear that beloved Filipino fashion designer Rajo Laurel has turned it into a reality for Lorin Gutierrez's prom night. Isn't it magical? Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather could never.
Here, Rajo dishes on what it took to spin Lorin's iridescent, ethereal piece to life—sans the trio of chaotic fairy godmothers.
What was the inspiration for the dress?
"We wanted something celestial-inspired, and I love sunsets, especially when there’s this lavender hue up in the sky."
Did Lorin have any special requests about the dress’ design?
"She just wanted something strapless. The rest, she left up to me."
The fabric is beautiful! What did you use and how did you achieve that blue-purple shimmer?
"We layered a lavender and an aqua blue material. Because of the transparency of the organza, the two colors fused effortlessly. We also sprinkled the pleats and the entire bodice with crystals."
Was it hand-pleated?
"Yes, in a sunburst manner!"
How long did the dress take to create?
"It took around four weeks to create from start to finish."
