Rajo Laurel Fall 2010: Sci-fi Africa The designer teamed up with new furniture showroom, Moroso, to showcase his Fall 2010 collection.

Rajo Laurel collaborated with high-end Italian furniture dealer Moroso to unveil a preview of fifteen select pieces from his Fall 2010 collection entitled Sci-Fi Africa.

Well-heeled guests such as Tessa Prieto-Valdes, Divine Lee, and Mia Borromeo were treated to a fashion show inside the Moroso showroom, where models including Ria Bolivar, Jasmine Maierhofer, and Valerie delos Santos strutted and posed alongside Moroso’s strikingly unique and artful pieces of modern furniture.

Embracing a stark color story of black and white with a singular use of geometric patterns, overlays, and cutouts, Rajo’s latest collection is a feat in combining two very unrelated inspirations: sci-fi and Africa—one otherworldly and the other extremely earthy. Rajo fused his two influences to come up with a commanding selection of dresses, blazers, and jumpsuits that embody both the strength and elegance of his Africana muse and the high-tech, futuristic elements of science fiction.

“The philosophy of this collection can be summarized in one world—paradox. I wanted to create a collection that would combine opposite forces, yet result in something that is both cohesive and sublime,” Rajo says. “Imagine combining high technology materials with low technology ones. Imagine mixing the refined with the raw. Imagine a composition using slow and fast attributes. This is what Sci-Fi Africa is about.”
