Project Hail Mary is currently the number one movie in the world—the universe, rather. For the uninitiated, the science fiction adventure film directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller is an adaptation of Andy Weir’s novel of the same name.

It follows the story of Ryland Grace, played by Ryan Gosling, a science teacher who wakes up on a spaceship lightyears away from Earth with no recollection of who he is—and with the fate of mankind in his hands. During his mission, he encounters and befriends an alien he names Rocky, voiced by James Ortiz.

The film has been in the works for six years, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. It entered Letterboxd’s Top 100 Films of All Time last March 18, just two days before it even premiered. It’s also the highest-grossing film debut of the year so far, and for Amazon MGM Studios, of all time, raking in $140.9 million on its opening weekend—over P8 billion.

This also marks the biggest Hollywood original non-franchise film opening since Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer—a full-circle moment for Ryan, who starred in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, which premiered around the same time in July 2023, sparking the “Barbenheimer” craze.

Though set in space, the story of hope and bravery resonates deeply given the Earth’s current state in the non-fictional realm. Ryan portrays Ryland Grace effortlessly, while costume designers David Crossman and Glyn Dillon do a brilliant job of letting the audience get to know him through his jacket choices and graphic shirts. In fact, the internet can’t stop talking about them.

Netizens Can’t Get Enough of Ryan Gosling’s Cardigan in “Project Hail Mary”

In Project Hail Mary, Ryan brings his character to life in T-shirts adorned with science puns that are sure to make you chuckle. Cozy knits also feature in his wardrobe. Beyond blowing your mind, each scene will have you thinking, “I want what he’s wearing.”

A particular standout is the knitted zip-up cardigan worn over a Canadian tuxedo, a coincidental homage to the actor’s roots.

In an interview with MTV UK, Ryan recalled some of the gifts he was allowed to take home from different movies he starred in. He kept the car from Drive, the motorcycle from The Place Beyond the Pines, and from Project Hail Mary? Yes, he took home the cardigan.

The Exact Knitted Cardigan Worn by Ryan Gosling in “Project Hail Mary”

The cardigan that netizens are raving about comes from Mary Maxim, a family-owned business with over 65 years of history in Canada and the United States.

Glyn personally scored it at the Mildmay Vintage Fayre back in 2024, and he immediately sent a photo to his co-costume designer David. When he found it, it was decorated with wolves and blood red footprints, which David found “a bit too aggressive” for the character. That same afternoon, Ryan was scheduled for his first fitting for Project Hail Mary. “When he saw it, he fell in love with it too,” said Glyn in an Instagram post.

The actor, having been living in London and spotting the city’s “urban fox population,” suggested changing the wolves to foxes. Glyn noted that while Londoners usually consider them “pests,” for him and Ryan, “they’re special, and it’s always a bit magical when you spot one crossing your path at night.” The team ordered yarn, Glyn “re-jigged the faces,” and the knitters brought the vision to life.

Mary Maxim does not actually sell ready-to-wear pieces. Instead, they provide the materials. The original version of the Wolf Cardigan is still up on their site, but they now offer the “Project Hail Mary” version. The knit kit comes with the yarn and the pattern you need to recreate it—all you need to source on your own are the zipper, and the knitting skills.

The Wolf Cardigan Knit Kit (Project Hail Mary Version) retails for $89.99 or approximately P5,380.
