Round 2 of the Bilibid inmates' fashion competition.
Project Bilibid Round 2 of the Bilibid inmates' fashion competition.
Puey Quiñones staged a bit of a coup last year, holding a fashion competition within the walls of the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa (click here for the article). It seems his students have grown in number and skill as this year's competition showed more promise from the inmates.

Seven groups, with 4 to 5 men in each, participated in the contest this year; that's 10 more than last year. They were asked to design, create, and paint to the tune of Go Green. “They were supposed to use different recyclable materials and be creative,” shares Puey.

From painting a large bohemian pattern of birds, dots and squiggles on a long coat, to mixing banig with paint-splattered jusi, these fashion students have come a long way. And the panel of judges—composed of actress Bebe Gandanghari, singer/songwriter Champ Lui-Po, the Philippine Daily Inquirer's Alex Vergara, Florsheim's Annabelle Chavez, Doctor Antonio Calado, and Style Bible's Isha Andaya—expressed their own appreciation for the work.

Each of the winning groups received cash prizes but the first place winners also won a shoes courtesy of Florsheim.

After having been featured generously in the press both local and foreign, Puey's fashion students are now flexing their creative muscle more and more. Plans of exporting scarves and shawls with the now tell-tale paint designs were announced during the show.
