2012 seems to be filled with platinum anniversaries—Manila Hotel also just marked its centenary—and who would have thought that Munsingwear, the power behind the super hip tee brand Original Penguin, was already 100 years old?
To celebrate, they recreated the Coney Island setting of their Summer 2012 ad campaign replete with a mock ferris wheel, circus pedestals, and a wooden boardwalk. Even the styling echoed the brand’s vintage Americana roots. The men—among them model and blogger Robbie Becroft, sportsmen Anthony Suntay and Jason Sabio, singers Markki Stroem and Champ Lui Po, and actors Xian Lim and Slater Young—were prepped up in the plaids, pastels, and chalky stripes that make up the season’s collection.
The pleasant surprise was how much broader the women’s selection has become. Models came strutting out in buttoned up, sorbet-hued tees that were paired with equally vivid skirts in poodle, skater, pencil, and mullet cuts. It was an adorably fresh take on preppy dressing.
Guests who wore the tee their way that night also gave additional insight. Divine Lee and Isabel Roces took the traditional route with khakis while Kelly Misa illustrated how it goes nicely with on-trend graphic trousers too. Particularly cute was how Phoemela Baranda kept to its retro roots channeling the ‘50s with a pencil skirt and leather jacket.
Original Penguin’s got a good collection in tow and the metro’s stylish young things are sporting the brand. It’s amazing how a brand this old can stay so current.
