News broke Sunday morning that designer Paul Herrera had passed away. Continuous tweets and status updates whirled around the internet sharing condolences and feelings of deep sorrow for him and his family.
His twin brother, John, shared on his Facebook account that Paul’s passing was caused by a "cardiac arrest brought about by meningitis."
His untimely death is a painful loss to the Philippine Fashion Industry. Not only did we lose a great talent who shared his gift through beautiful clothes and accessories but we also lost a dear friend who served as an inspiration to a great number of our local talents as well. Most of Paul’s greatest works were shared with John as the two were the driving force of their brand House of Herrera. While John had his solo stint as he participated in various shows and took on lone projects, the twins eventually came together and merged their talents as they appeared on national TV for a design contest. Paul, at 33, has designed outfits for the likes of Iza Calzado and G Tongi. Designer Xernan Orticio also remembers Paul as the person who taught him the art of cutting patterns. But aside from the remarkable clothes, Paul was first and foremost a bag desginer who created beautifully crafted pieces for formalwear.
Though saddened by this loss, we choose to remember Paul with the beauty that he shared through his exceptional work. We pray that you are in a better place now, Paul. Happy and content with the mark you’ve left as a great designer, a friend, and a brother. God speed!
