One of the hobbies sisters Maricel and Maricor Sombrio picked up during quarantine was crocheting. Looping together threads of yarn became some sort of "therapy" that helped them through the mundane times. They set up an Instagram account as a repository for their works, but with the capricious behavior of internet algorithms and all, their pandemic projects started to pique the interest of many style-savvy individuals.
And thus, Cora and Cecilia became an official clothing brand. Their eye candy designs have most probably passed through your feed before, as they've been swathed around some of the most fashionable celebs today. Prime examples of their star-studded clientele include Kylie Verzosa, Lovi Poe, and Sue Ramirez—oh, and Paris Hilton, no biggie.
What is Cora and Cecilia?
As you may have guessed, this sisterly enterprise gets its name from the names of the owners. "Our mom told us she wanted to name us Maria Cecilia and Maria Corazon, but ended up with the abbreviated Maricel and Maricor. When it came to thinking of a brand name, we came up with the idea of 'Cora and Cecilia', our could-have-been names," they tell Preview.
One OOTD of theirs that went viral is the sunset-hued butterfly coords set worn by Kylie Verzosa (yes, the same one Paris Hilton envied). The dainty design just hits home with them, as it reminds them of their late father. They add that, "butterflies symbolize beauty in despair. When we see a butterfly it reminds us of personal transformation, growing to the person we will become, and appreciating the wonders of life."
How did Cora and Cecilia start?
Maricel's fascination and skills with crocheting actually go all the way back to her elementary school days. Maricor eventually became a real-life doll for her to style, as she would fashion crochet halter tops just for her. She eventually passed down the craft to her little sister, and the two have never stopped stitching together yarn since then.
The brand recently just marked two years in the scene, and they've already become quite the prominent name since then. Cora and Cecilia is run primarily by its namesakes, with every piece custom-made for the buyer. "Our patterns are simple but carefully thought out, so our clients always get the most unique designs," they share. From the sizing, all the way down to the preferred design and color scheme, everything is made to measure.
