Onitsuka Tiger’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection was definitely a show to remember from this season's Milan Fashion Week presentations. Paying homage to its Japanese roots, Creative Director Andrea Pompilio set the theme for Onitsuka's new collection. Modern minimalism took centerstage and echoed their signature sporty aesthetic in the looks they sent down the runway.

Described as a “subtractive aesthetic that strips away what isn’t necessary,” Andrea redefines the sporty spirit of Onitsuka through their ready-to-wear pieces. While their metropolitan soul is still present, one thing new brought to the table was their use of fabrics and complex constructions. Most of the collection came in the colors black and white but was punctuated by hues of yellow and green—inspired by the color of Japanese basil leaves.

While quite simple at first glance, closer inspection of the garments reveal the sublime details, such as embroidered logos with zigzag stitches or the decorative seams on the hems, that instantly transform them into design objects. There’s also a redesign of the body shape, with flowy or loose silhouettes reigning supreme. We see kimono-like robes trailing behind or hakama-inspired pleated skirts reminiscent of what kyÅ«dō arches wore. The brand’s iconic jumpsuit also makes an appearance on the runway but comes in a baggy iteration.

Onitsuka’s signature SERRANO™ shoes have also gotten an upgrade in the form of a tiger scratch design on the front, renamed the TIRRACK model™, while Japan’s traditional setta slippers were also given a contemporary flair with the brand's platform leather version. As for the accessories, world-class audio equipment manufacturer Bang & Olufsen created a special headphone set to go compliment the Onitsuka outfits.
