Manila saluted one of its homegrown fashion designers, the Hollywood-based Oliver Tolentino during his first Philippine gala as the Metrowear Icon for 2011.

Showing a multicolored collection of 70+ pieces inspired by the drama and glamour of Old Hollywood, Oliver exhibited his finesse with red carpet-ready designs, which has gained him a following in the US, where he counts Amber Riley and Cee-Lo Green as clients.

The fashion show started with a purple suite, graduating to green and gray, beige, yellow, orange, blue, and finally, pink. The color story's liveliness mirrors Oliver's vivacious design aesthetic and exquisite eye for color. Notably, there is a refreshing absence of black and red gowns in the show. "I want to use colors that are not expected on the red carpet," Oliver revealed.

The pieces are heavily textured, cut from silk chiffon, dupioni, and French lace combined with local fabrics. The designer is an avid proponent of indigenous materials, using them regularly for his designs amd promoting them in his shows around the globe. A special fabric woven from waterlily and jute appear prominently in some of the pieces.

Several celebrities and fashion and society personalities graced the catwalk, including Kuh Ledesma, Venus Raj (who closed the show), Jake Cuenca, Tessa Prieto-Valdes, Divine Lee and Victor Basa, Tweetie de Leon-Gonzales, and Anton del Rosario. Veteran models Tutay Maristela, Joann Bitagcol, and Marina Benipayo also strutted on the runway.
