Filipino designer Oliver Tolentino has been carving a terrific niche for himself abroad with his successes in dressing up Hollywood stars and representing Filipino talent in various fashion events across the globe. This year, he comes home to present his very first Philippine gala show as the 2011 Metrowear Icon.

"I love doing shows, and my experience are high for this one," Oliver says. "The Metrowear Icon shows are always well done, so I was flattered when the organizers approached me early in the year about being a part of their event."

The gala, happening on October 24, 2011, will showcase a 60-piece collection made from Philippine fabrics such as piña, abaca, raw silk cocoon, and a new fabric made from water lily and jute. "As most people know, I proudly promote my roots and our native fabrics wherever I go," Oliver enthuses. Indeed, he revealed to us that 50% of the Metrowear collection will be cut from local weaves from Filipino communities that he has developed close working relationships with. The collection will also be "very Hollywood" and "very colorful," with no red or black gowns to appear on the runway. "I want to use colors that are not expected on the red carpet," he says.
