Shoe designer Vince Camuto died at his Connecticut home on Wednesday at 78 years old. The cause was cancer. He co-founded Nine West in 1978 with Jerome Fischer, and the two sold the label for about $900 million in 1999.

A couple of years later, he founded the Camuto Group, which designed lines for BCBG Max Azria, Jessica Simpson, Lucky Brand, Banana Republic and Ann Taylor, in addition to their own. In 2006, he helped develop the footwear collection that birthed Tory Burch's famous "Reva" ballet flat.
