Nike's women's month campaign for 2019, titled Dream Crazier, is all about reclaiming the word crazy. The inspiring ad, unveiled at the Oscars and narrated by famed tennis player Serena Williams, honors female athletes by showcasing a number of groundbreaking achivements made by women in their respective sports. This montage includes Serena herself, fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad, gymnast Simone Biles, and snowboarder Chloe Kim, among others. All trailblazing women who have, in some way, broken the glass ceiling.
Serena, who was highly criticized September of last year for arguing with an umpire, starts the ad by voicing out the negative sexist stereoypes that have plagued women for as long as we can remember. "If we show emotion, we're called dramatic. If we wanna play against men, we're nuts, and if we dream of equal opportunity, delusional. When we stand for something, we're unhinged. When we're too good, there's something wrong with us. And if we get angry...we're just being crazy," she says.
Crazy, a word used against passionate women who have something to fight for, or for female athletes who can do the impossible. A word used by the rest of society to contain what it is that threatens them. It's exactly this word that Nike's ad calls for us to overturn and reclaim, not just in sports, but in other fields as well. Basically, if they call women crazy for going above and beyond their expectations, it's high-time we show them what crazy can really do.
