A refresher on linen, along with interesting ways to style it.

Linen, a staple textile worn during the summer season, is more than just a breathable fabric. We learn that both cotton and linen are eco-friendly fabrics because they come from natural sources. But it’s chosen over cotton, at times, since it’s lightweight. Linen is a durable textile made from the flax plant. As the fashion world has shifted toward more biodegradable and sustainable options when it comes to fabric, linen has become a hot commodity once again.

"It’s much more sustainable than cotton and it lasts forever, so it’s a very good investment," fashion historian Kimberly Chrisman-Campbell tells Independent.

On their part, fashion houses and brands such as Jacquemus, Reformation, Mansur Gavriel, among others, are creating new designs around this fabric, which gives us fashion enthusiasts more choices. If you’ve hopped on the linen train and are looking for more ways to wear this wonderful fabric, here are some ideas:

1. Match linen with linen.

The typical match for a linen shirt would be a blazer or a pair of jeans, but why not partner linen with linen? Opt for a one-piece like a jumpsuit or dress—this way you’ll look cool, calm, and collected, while feeling that way, too.

2. Go for an unusual silhouette or style.

Linen once gave off the impression as something that came from your mother or grandmother’s closet. Luckily, you have an array of modern options from designers, who have adjusted the basic silhouettes for a cooler vibe. It could have an asymmetric shoulder, a high slit, or low back, just like this cream dress from Jacquemus.

 3. Embrace uniquely Filipino details.

Local brands are paying their tributes to the butterfly sleeves, and this includes an iteration of a linen dress with said details. These uniquely Filipino elements are not something you’ll see anywhere else in the world, so it’s something to be proud of. Below is HaloHalo’s co-founder Cara Sumabat in a white linen dress with eye-catching sleeves.

4. Adorn it with embellishments.

Homegrown retailer Anika has made this sustainable offering even more wearable by first, attaching floral jacquard cut-outs that make for a more feminine aesthetic, and second, by making it reversible. You can wear this with the embellishments either in front or at the back and leave the ribbon untied or in a knot. It’s these simple details that make a piece more fun to wear.

5. Wear it to work.

In lieu of slacks or cotton trousers, invest in a tailored linen suit. It’s a great way to stay comfortable, while appearing formal and respectable at work. It’s also a more suitable option for our warmer climes. All you’ll need to do in the morning is pair it with a fun shirt.

6. Lend it character.

Linen has become synonymous to oversized designs and may sometimes be unflattering to your shape. You can remedy this by cinching your waist with a belt or tying your shirt in a knot. This will create a focal point and give a linen dress or shirt more personality.

7. Go beyond earthy tones.

The M.O. when it comes to linen is usually to wear it with a neutral palette, complete with espadrilles and a woven bag. But linen is no longer just about earth tones and natural elements anymore. Sport a more vibrant color and accessorize with modern add-ons.
