Filipino skateboarder Margielyn Didal made headlines in early August following her memorable stint at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo thanks to her all-around good vibes, her hilarious photobombing tendencies, and even her effortlessly cool style. Folks online took notice of the athlete’s colorful oversized tee as well as her custom sneakers, both of which were created with sportswear brand New Balance. Didal has been collaborating with New Balance since April 2020 and their continuous partnership has spawned another stylish pair of kicks: Feast your eyes on the New Balance Numeric 272 Sneakers by Margielyn Didal.

Where Didal's previously released NM379 sneakers were all about the colors of the Philippine flag, this pair takes a more personal route in terms of design and inspiration. Didal’s 272’s are inspired by her younger days as a street vendor in Cebu where she sold pusô (also known as hanging rice), a Cebuano staple made by boiling rice in a woven pouch of palm leaves—you’ll even see Didal holding pusô in her photos rocking the sneakers.
In a press release, New Balance said that Didal "discovered skateboarding while selling the [hanging rice], working alongside her mother, next to a skatepark in Cebu." Thus, the sneakers pay homage to her humble beginnings and are also a reminder of her incredible success.

The New Balance Numeric 272 Sneakers by Margielyn Didal will be available starting October 22 at New Balance stores in Glorietta, Power Plant Mall, and Trinoma, The Athlete's Foot stores in Glorietta and Robinsons Place Manila, Common Ground skate shop in Cebu, and on New Balance's official LazMall page.
