The Queen’s Gambit makes you want to trade your sneakers for a classy pair of ballet flats and dress like a lady in the '60s. The series is undeniably a well-written visual feast—and that’s quite a feat considering this is all about chess.
Of course, at the center of it all is Anya Taylor-Joy’s engaging portrayal of the brilliant but tormented Beth Harmon. The 24-year-old actress was instantly catapulted into global stardom because of the show, but unlike Beth, Anya admits to have cared less about her dressing up having grown up a bit of a “tomboy”.

“It’s not that I didn’t like clothes but it was more like I wasn’t really that aware of [fashion]?” Anya tells Preview. But that couldn’t-care-less attitude has definitely changed since taking on the character of the chess genius. “I really like how Beth puts together an outfit. Now I pay more attention to the whole look rather than just like, ‘Oh I’ll wear this shirt’ and not care about what’s around it. Now I pay more attention to how an outfit comes together and I thank her for that.”

Costume designer Gabriele Binder notes that Beth’s a character “who defines herself very much by what she’s wearing” and so her fashion evolves based on her life experiences. Which eventually led to the redhead’s interesting and ever-changing style.

In our interview with Anya, we couldn’t help but ask what her favorite outfits were from the show and she revealed quite a shocking bit of trivia. “Okay, so true story, because so much of the [costumes] were vintage, and because Gabriele and I worked so closely together, she at the end was like, ‘This is your wardrobe. So come on to the wardrobe truck, pick whatever you want and take it home.’ So I got on the bus, picked my stuff, and was like, ‘This is amazing! I never have to shop again!’” You heard that right—she now owns all of Beth Harmon’s clothes from the show. Talk about the best parting gift ever!

But the piece-de-resistance for Anya is the “blue coat Beth wears going to Margaret’s house,” which she's dying wear because of how good it simply looks and its massive pocket that she describes as “so useful”. But despite the generous gift from Netflix’s costume department, she has yet to take home Beth’s covetable wardrobe. “Since the show has done so well, all of the clothes are now in a museum in Brooklyn! Which is obviously wonderful, but I hope to get them back after they’re done being displayed.”

Congratulations Anya on the hit show and new wardrobe! We can’t wait to see your OOTDs sporting Beth’s clothes IRL.
