Nadine Lustre broke the internet last November 1 when her photographer friend Andrei Suleik posted a casual snap of the singer and actress in her Halloween costume. The morena beauty picked Tekken character Josie Rizal—the game’s first ever Filipino character—as her costume this year. Netizens were quick to praise Nadine for the accuracy of her outfit, down to her hair and makeup. Her look even reached Tekken producer and director Katsuhiro Harada, who tweeted and described her costume as “perfect.”
Yesterday, Nadine posted the full look on her Instagram account and we were finally able to appreciate all the details of her meticulous costume. Preview reached out to her stylist Joanna Gee for an exclusive interview as she breaks down the Pinay fighter’s ‘fit. Turns out, Nadine is as meticulous with her Halloween costumes as she is with any creative endeavor she sinks her teeth into. Read the interview below.
What made Nadine decide on this character this year?
"She said that recently she’s been playing a lot of Tekken, that’s why she decided to be Josie Rizal this year!"
Who made the costume?
"The headband, belt, top and skirt were made and handpainted by Black Code, headed by Ica Villanueva and Aaron Masangat. While the accessories like the earrings, necklace, custom shoes and details were made by costume and props maker Mark Rodil.
How long did it take to make?
"The process started around three weeks before Halloween, which also happens to be Nadine’s birthday. It’s a special occasion every year as it is tradition already that Nadine celebrates her birthday dressing up for Halloween! We always try and have fun recreating different characters or looks each year."
What piece was the hardest to make or source?
"It was quite easy to put this all together honestly, because the suppliers and the costume and props team knew what they were doing. And to top it off, Nadine can pull off any look! Maybe we just got a bit challenged with handpainting the silk fabric, since it was a bit hard to manipulate or paint on, but overall it worked out in the end."
How involved was Nadine in making the costume?
"Nadine is very hands-on when it comes to her looks and Halloween is no exception. We had around two fittings to perfect the look and achieve the perfect fit of the garment and the accessories.
"[During] the first fitting, we had the top remade to a brighter yellow, then had to try different handpainting techniques to perfect the details of the top and the skirt. Then we tweaked the accessories a bit to make it fit better. Her attention to detail is so spot on that we really loved the final result!
"Nadine also made some parts of the belt (the small flowers) by hand to properly recreate Josie’s look down to the finest details.. She’s super hands-on and artistic, really!"
