Heralded by Franco Moschino, the Italian fashion house prides itself on challenging fashion norms with humor and wit. But how did this now-iconic name in fashion reach its illustrious status today? Below, find out all the essentials about Moschino in our comprehensive guide.
The History of Moschino
Before becoming the household name in luxury and humor-infused fashion that it is today, Moschino found its footing in the vibrant fashion scene of Milan, Italy. In 1983, Franco Moschino founded the brand, initially focusing on casualwear that was infused with a distinctive playful edge. Franco's designs quickly stood out for their subversive take on high fashion, blending traditional styles with unexpected elements.
Franco Moschino’s career began in the early 1970s as a sketch artist for Gianni Versace. However, his desire to critique the fashion industry’s often serious demeanor led him to establish his own label. Moschino's collections were known for their satire, often featuring bold graphics, slogans, and surreal takes on classic fashion staples.

The brand’s first major success came with its ready-to-wear collections that juxtaposed luxury with pop culture references and playful critiques of the fashion industry itself. For instance, the brand used motifs like the peace symbol, hearts, and smiley faces long before they became mainstream in fashion.
Tragically, Franco Moschino passed away in 1994, but his irreverent spirit and visionary approach had already firmly established the brand’s identity. Under the guidance of his long-time friend and collaborator, Rossella Jardini, Moschino continued to thrive and expand its creative boundaries.
