"Modeling is not about looking pretty."

With her piercing dark gaze and flawless bone structure, it’s hard not to be drawn to Manila-based Taiwanese model Jessica Yang. However, even with her striking looks, Jessica admits that modeling wasn’t something she thought was for her. It took some prodding from one of her professors in college before the model took the chance and entered the industry, kickstarting her career in the Philippines.

We’re certain it wasn’t easy to leave one’s hometown and acclimate to a foreign country, but Jessica did it all with a finesse that came naturally to her. And despite her initial hesitation when it came to modeling, she found that striking a pose came innate to her, resulting in her slowly yet surely falling in love with the art of modeling. Since her first foray into the scene back in 2018, Jessica has modeled for local designers like Bonita PenarandaBoom Sason, and Anthony Ramirez, just to name a few. Her international portfolio also boasts of the likes of AldoL’Oreal, and Converse.

Preview Go-See: Jessica Yang on Her Career As a Model

How did you get your start in the modeling industry? Tell us the story of how you got “discovered.”

“Freshman year in university, my IT professor who turned into a designer (but passed away this year) Yako Reyes, discovered me! He said I looked like Ai Tominaga and thought I could really be a model. I [initially] said no because I’m an introvert and big crowds just aren’t my thing, but he then called my parents to school and he assured [them] that this could really be an opportunity. He made me try out for fashion week castings and I got into shows and everything started from there!”

How long have you been a model and what do you love the most about it?

“Since 2007, I loved being part of the art. When brands/designers get me for work, I do my best to complete their vision and sell their creations! It’s just satisfying!”

Would you say being a model is your dream job? Why or why not?

“[It’s] not my dream job but I guess it’s my calling because I’m just naturally good at it. And I know I shine and [become] a different person when I model! We are on earth to contribute our talents and I’ve been contributing it.”

What was the biggest struggle you’ve faced in the modeling industry and how did you overcome it?

“When I was first in London as a freelancer, no agency wanted to sign me even with my very strong portfolio (all my model books are only torn sheets from magazines). They wanted a fresh face and they thought [I was] too experienced. But a few months later, I went back to London again, this time with a mother agency, and I got signed right away with one of the best local agencies there in London! (Nevs Models)”

What would you say is the most memorable project you’ve done as a model so far?

“I say this in all my interviews, but seriously, every job! I’ve done big jobs, internationally—they fly me to amazing places [and I see] my face everywhere. I’ve also done smaller jobs, but the way I see how clients are satisfied with my work is beyond!”

What’s your go-to model-off-duty look?

In your own opinion, what are the characteristics of a great model?

“Confident but humble. Cool but respectful.”

What’s your advice to aspiring models?

“I think in the modeling world, looks are seasonal! They might not want you this season, but next season you might be exactly what they need! So keep on trying! And remember, modeling is not about looking pretty. You are there to complete the vision [and bring] the design to life!”
