Miss Universe Philippines 2026 is well underway, with delegates from all over the country (and the world, even) vying to become Ahtisa Manalo's successor. One of the most anticipated segments of the preliminary rounds was the national costume competition, where candidates showcased heritage through looks referencing their hometowns.

For this year's edition, the pageant introduced a "Bodies of Water" theme for the competition. A tribute to the seas that surround the country, the assignment tasked queens to "flow with meaning, power, and pride" in show-stopping ensembles.

In a sea of mythical creatures and aquatic structures, each stunning in its own right, Miss Negros Occidental Alex Colmenares stood out for her gastronomy-inspired entry.

Alex had audiences gasping when she stepped on stage in a “Negrense Foods” can, featuring sardines cooked in soya oil on the front and nutrition facts on the back. She later emerged from the can, revealing a Filipiniana jumpsuit adorned with pieces of the dish.

"Inspired by the coastal heritage of Negros Occidental and the iconic Victorias Food Corporation of Victorias City, this national costume honors the thriving sardine industry while highlighting the coastal life and hardworking fishermen of Negros," Alex wrote on Instagram. Designed by her fellow Negrense and designer Ruffy Itaas, the look was a multilayered homage to one of the region's prime exports.

Stepping out of the can, her terno dress also harked back to fisherfolk imagery. "The shimmering silver and blue bodice with Filipiniana sleeves mirrors the movement of sardines beneath the sea, while the playful headpiece celebrates abundance and rich culinary tradition," Alex continued.

What a memorable look! Congrats, Alex and Ruffy!
