It's not just blue, it's not turquoise, it's not lapis. It's actually cerulean.

Few movies have produced as many iconic lines as The Devil Wears Prada. It’s been twenty years since its inception and viewers, from casual fans to fashion enthusiasts alike, can still quote its most memorable zingers word for word. Most of them, of course, came from the mouth of the titular character herself, ice queen and editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly, played by Meryl Streep.
Who could forget "Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking" and “By all means, move at a glacial pace. You know how that thrills me.” Perhaps her most legendary moment, though, came when she schooled Anne Hathaway, and generations of watchers, on the color cerulean and the fashion industry’s influence on a grander scale.
With the long-awaited sequel scheduled for release this May, Meryl recently appeared on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert in an outfit that pays tribute to her unforgettable monologue.
Meryl Streep Wears Iconic Cerulean Sweater in Interview
The actress stepped out on the stage in a vibrant blue sweater that talk show host Stephen Colbert clocked immediately. "This is Annie Hathaway’s outfit from The Devil Wears Prada,” responded Meryl who also wore electric blue specs to match.
Her look, complete with black trousers and loafer heels, is a clear nod to their cult classic movie. The famous sweater in question was designed by J.Crew, in partnership with stylist Micaela Erlanger, especially for Meryl.
According to a press release, the cashmere crewneck “reimagines cerulean through the modern lens.” If Andy Sachs’ sweater looked like a worn-out hand-me-down fished “out of some clearance bin,” the American brand’s iteration sports a more elevated fabric fit for the acting legend.

"Meryl makes everything iconic. We just made sure this cerulean lived up to it,” said J.Crew’s creative director and executive designer Olympia Gayot. She also praised Meryl for her delivery in the scene, which now forever lives as a slogan in sartorial culture. “That monologue is so smart and funny—it reminds you that what feels personal is actually part of a much bigger story, which is why The Devil Wears Prada still resonates,” she explained.
If you’re looking to get your hands on this iconic piece, then you’ll have to wait a bit longer. Designed exclusively for Meryl, it’s yet to be made available in the exact color we all want. That said, you can still get the cable-knit sweater in other vibrant shades on their website, including Candlelight, Radiant Ruby, and Neon Capri.

Jam’s way of exploration is by reading and writing. She hopes to always be lost in words and, occasionally, a good podcast.
