A few months ago, at the Fashion Watch 2011 show of Jojie Lloren, Maureen Disini was talking to me about how she had been training under Rhett Eala and how happy she was that he had taken her under his wing to show her the ropes. Fast forward to August 2011, YStyle’s Bea Ledesma tells me she’s done a shoot with Maureen’s first solo collection and that the latter will be selling her pieces at Jun Escario’s store in Greenbelt 5.

Maureen has come a long way from doing freelance styling for celebrities and fashion spreads to taking on the position of Fashion Editor for a local glossy to eventually going abroad to study. Her designs, as seen in the behind the scenes video, reflect the influence of Rhett’s mastery of the goddess silhouette and draping techniques. However, she’s taken this and made it her own in a vivid mango yellow, ripe fuchsia, or sea green cinched with thin gold belts. You see her being very hands-on during the shoot, styling each gown herself and reviewing photos through the window on Niccolo Cosme’s camera.

It’s always interesting when a fashion editor turns designer because they bring with them that conceptual view of clothing stylists have when putting pieces together. (Vera Wang and Kate Spade are two women who’ve successfully made this transition.) We’re looking forward to seeing more from Maureen.
