In some cases, trends merge, and the market capitalizes on such hybrids with often unexpected releases.

Enter the Mary Jane sneaker. It's exactly what it sounds like: a pair of trainers designed to appear just like the good ol' school shoe, complete with a singular strap between each side. Wherever you find yourself in the academia-slash-athleisure Venn diagram, these kicks are sure to fit into any outfit combo. So is it an ingenious creation or a Frankenstein gone too far? Read ahead and see for yourself.

Trend Explainer:
A (Recent) History of Mary Jane Sneakers
Donned by schoolgirls around the globe, the Mary Jane has gained massive popularity over the past few fashion cycles. The uptick in academe-inspired dressing bestowed "it" status on the leather stepper, with many brands releasing their takes on the classic. The great sneaker-ification of MJs occured in 2024, when designers such as Wales Bonner and Anna Sui thought of adding some feminine flair to our go-to sneaks. Debuted during the Spring/Summer season of 2025, the Mary Jane sneaker caught the eyes of many for its idiosyncratic design that ticked off both boxes.

What distinguishes the model from the ballet sneaker—its daintier younger sis—is a matter of shape and form. Aside from the singular strap that goes across rather than criss-cross, the MJ sneaker is made of more robust materials like rubber and suede, as compared to the ballet's leather, canvas, or satin. The sole is also significantly thicker, as it was crafted for pavements rather than polished hardwood floors.

Suffice to say, the sub-trend quickly caught on, with maisons and brands trademarking their takes on the subversive shoe. Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence was once spotted rocking a pair while out and about, casually donning them with loose pants and an even looser jacket. Their strappy business makes them easy to slip on, which makes them an ideal running-out-of-the-door shoe. Even when worn in haste, the familiar MJ silhouette imparts just enough cutesiness to any look.
