Fit for the needs of every bride in this new normal.

Fashion always adapts to the times, and bridal fashion is no exception. With grand ceremonies out of the question, couples have resorted to intimate ceremonies and have simplified their fashion choices along with it. This is exactly what designer Mark Bumgarner had in mind upon conceptualizing his latest ready-to-wear collection, The Bridal Concept 2.0.

“During quarantine we’ve had brides change their wedding dresses to a much more simple design. Despite the social distancing measures, couples still choose to get married through a mini ceremony (a "minimony" as we call it). Be it an intimate or a civil wedding celebration, brides will want a dress to wear on her special day,” he shares in an interview with Preview.ph.

“So in this collection, I veered away from my usual cathedral ball gowns. This is a collection of more streamlined, chic, and affordable dresses that can be made to measure for the new kind of bride.”

Mark’s collection consists of 29 looks that range from gowns of various lengths, as well as pantsuits that come in shocking colors like cobalt blue and hot pink. He understands that despite weddings being pared down to the basics, brides still want to look their best. It’s this exact sophisticated simplicity that Mark was inspired by: “The designs in the collection were mostly inspired by my past clients who are very stylish and have very simple taste. Before the quarantine I was also working on a collection using pleated materials so I thought of incorporating it in the collection.”

This concept came to life in the form of Mark’s signature tea-length dresses, empire-cut gowns with backless details, as well as off-shoulder "clover gowns"—an alternative to grand ball gowns.

The collection also served as Mark’s opportunity to reimagine what modern bridal fashion could be. Hence, the use of contemporary touches mixed with formal silhouettes; like the floor-length gown with a sheer skirt, or a square-neckline midi dress with a thigh-high slit.

But perhaps what best encapsulates this modernity is the bevy of pantsuits. There’s a gorgeous ivory pantsuit with a pleated sash that cascades into a billow train. And for more adventurous brides, there’s one in cobalt blue with a halter dress overlay made with delicate plisse fabric. Although these looks are usually associated with civil weddings, they’re made for all kinds of ceremonies no matter where the location is—brides are becoming more experimental after all. “I would like to illustrate to future brides that wedding dresses can also be short, or in the form of pants,” Mark explains.

To further translate his exciting vision for the modern bride, Mark used a mix of luxurious fabrics, “I used different types of French laces, silk gazar, crepe, and some organza. My aesthetic as a designer is always about structure, so I always work with these fabrics most of the time.”
