Maris Racal has been rounding the international film festival circuit recently for her 2024 sports drama Sunshine. It’s not just the movie she’s been promoting, though, but Filipino culture as well. Last February, she turned heads at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival for her sampaguita-inspired dress. A few months later, she once again donned Pinoy Pride at the 27th Taipei Film Festival.

The actress turned up to the event in a sophisticated terno, a traditional Philippine dress made red-carpet ready by AJ Javier and styled by Adrianne Concepcion. Designed with a voluminous train, the black-and-white, ankle-length number is embroidered with black florals, giving it a romantic flair that adds to its understated elegance.

Further described by AJ as clean and classic, the custom frock is a tribute to Audrey Hepburn’s iconic look as designed by Hubert de Givenchy for her 1954 film Sabrina. To give it a Filipino twist, AJ made it his own by infusing tasseled butterfly sleeves that perfectly stood out with Maris’s hair tied back into a sleek bun done by Aries Manal. Finishing off her beauty look, makeup artist Janica Cleto accentuated her lush puckers with a red lippy.

Sunshine stars Maris alongside Elijah Canlas, Xyriel Manabat, Jennica Garcia, and Meryll Soriano. It tells the titular character’s story as a budding gymnast trying out for the national team. Her hopes of making it to the Olympics are dashed when she finds out that she’s pregnant, derailing her from the career-defining opportunity.
The film won the Crystal Bear award at the Berlin International Film Festival, deeming it the Best Film of the Generation Kplus and Generation 14plus categories. It's also already been picked up for distribution in North America. Meanwhile, according to Maris’s post, Sunshine is set to show in the Philippines starting July 23, 2025, in SM Cinemas nationwide.
