Maris Racal Has a Sporty Spin on the Filipiniana for the “Sunshine” Screening

It’s a nod to her sports-themed drama.

Sunshine, Maris Racal’s international film fest-winning movie, is finally making its way to Philippine theaters. A month before its July 23 release around the country, the cast and crew held an intimate advanced screening with their friends and colleagues in attendance. The star of the film, Maris once again turned heads dressed in modern Filipiniana garb, but this time it came with an extra twist.

Maris Racal’s Sporty Filipiniana Outfit

Styled by Adrianne Concepcion, Maris’s ensemble for the event married traditional Filipiniana style with sportswear as a nod to Sunshine’s theme. FYI, the film revolves around Maris’s tumultuous journey as a young gymnast who finds out she’s pregnant during the week of a career-defining try-out for the national team.

“Nakakaiyak ang suporta niyo sa amin ni direk. Ramdam namin ang pagmamahal niyo sa pelikula! At sobrang thank you sa mga magaganda at mapusong reviews niyo huhu!” the actress expressed in her Instagram post.

According to Adrianne, the custom outfit crafted by Austeen Soriano of fashion brand Maison Soriano, took inspiration from tennis with its pleated skirt paired with a white cropped jacket featuring a band collar reminiscent of a varsity jacket. Both pieces were embellished with athletic stripes to further emphasize the sporty design.

To incorporate a Filipiniana flair, the top was fashioned with butterfly sleeves “for an impactful punctuation. Clean, function, and distinctly Filipina,” Adrianne told Preview. Complementing the ensemble, Maris sported a radiant beauty look, wearing dewy makeup by Jay Salcedo and a sleek ponytail styled by Valerie Corpuz.

Maris has shown her staunch support for women's rights throughout her promotional run for Sunshine. She once explained in an interview the film’s ethos, saying, “I accepted the role because I fully support the message. I think women's reproductive rights should be given more importance because there are a lot of women who need that chance and freedom to choose their own, whatever they want with their own bodies.”
