The pieces in Steph Tan's At the Stroke of Midnight look like they came straight out of a modern fairytale. You wouldn't really expect that she pulled inspiration from something so haunting—the rainforest at midnight. And yet, she produced garments so sophisticated yet experimental, pushing the envelope with the right amount of force using dip-dyed fringe and layers upon layers of pleats. Steph's signature body-hugging lines, high-shine dresses, and elegant cutouts were a feast for the eyes, and we can't wait to see more.
Learn more about Steph and her latest collection below:
How would you describe your aesthetic and design philosophy?
"My garments are always fun, comfortable, sophisticated, and feminine with an edgy twist. I also enjoy creating pieces that flatter women's curves. Fashion is about being comfortable and confident. It's not always about following the latest trends."
Do you have a signature design or key element evident throughout your collections?
"Recurring elements in my collection are cutouts, body-conscious lines, pleating, and color-blocking."
Where do you usually draw inspiration from? How about for this collection?
"My travels are usually my most important source of inspiration. But for my latest collection, At the Stroke of Midnight, I was inspired by the intricacy and beauty of the rainforest at night."
Can you walk us your creative process as you designed your PMFF collection?
"First, the mood and atmosphere (dark fantasy) of the theme were established. After doing research on [my] theme, I collected visual materials such as photos and different swatches to create a mood board. I chose different colors, fabrics, silhouettes that support the concept of the collection. Next, our team made test dummies, which I tried on so we can experiment on the different looks of the collection."
