They say that behind every breathtaking celebrity selfie is a professional makeup artist at work. With that in mind, let’s cozy up with the stars’ glam teams this week starting off with celebrity makeup artist Jigs Mayuga. Meet the brilliant talent behind the industry’s spectacular ad campaigns and most beautiful faces, including that of Bea Alonzo, Bianca Gonzalez, and Shaina Magdayao to name a few.
Read on to know more about Jigs and maybe even score a beauty tip or two.
What’s the first thing you thought of when you woke up this morning?
I need to feed the dog and workout.
Speaking of mornings, what’s your morning beauty regimen like?
I wash my face first thing in the morning with my favorite cleanser and my Clarisonic Mia 2, and then I moisturize.
You’ve lived in Milan, San Francisco, and London. Which of the three cities was most memorable for you? Why?
Milan because I lived here the longest for school and I did a few jobs while staying in the city.
Among the three cities, which one for you has the most beautiful women?
You were a flight attendant before becoming a makeup artist. What were the most beautiful places you’ve been to? Give us five and what you find beautiful about them.
Copenhagen, everything is just so organized and everyone looks so chic. Berlin, for it’s energy and nightlife. Rome, the eternal city has majestic sights in every corner. Prague, romantic and very old world. New York, there’s always something to do in this city.
When did you realize you were into makeup? Take us back to the earlier days of your career.
It started way back in high school. I would always read a lot of fashion magazines and focus mostly on the beauty pages. I started dabbling into makeup in school plays and eventually did the makeup of some friends as a hobby. I was a flight attendant for four years after college but even then, I would do the makeup of the other female flight attendants on our layovers and even on break during flights. In 2004, I enrolled in my first school which was ICI (Innovations and Concepts, Inc.) along Jupiter, Makati. I took the six-month cosmetology [course], which included both hair and makeup.
Tell us about your most memorable work to date. Why does it stand out to you?
There’s so much to choose from but because of the amount of work we had to put in just to get the shot, it would have to be the SUNSTROKE editorial for Preview published in 2006.
Do you have a beauty philosophy?
In this age of HD film and photography, less is more so skincare is becoming more important than piling on tons of cosmetics.
What’s the best compliment you’ve ever given a girl?
That I’d sleep with her if I were straight. Solenn Heussaff is a prime example.
Any dream projects you’d like to execute? How about dream clients?
I’d love to open a school in the near future. Dream client? MADONNA.
So aside from makeup, what else keeps you inspired?
Home decor, cooking, and working out.
We hear that you’re pretty into men’s fashion as well. Ever considered a career in designing or styling perhaps?
I’ve given styling some thought in the past but I’ll leave that to the pros instead. (Laughs)
For first time clients, how do you suggest they prepare when booking a makeup artist? How do they go about booking an appointment with you? Should they prepare pegs?
I suggest they look for photos of looks that they like, taking into consideration their face shape, hair style and hair color so that we can have a realistic goal during consultation.
What’s next for Jigs Mayuga?
I'm planning on taking another short makeup course in London in October. That dream project I mentioned is already in the works so please do watch out for that in 2015.
