Mad For Plaid Checkmate this season's punchy pattern as it goes classic to glam.

Add kick to a prim suit with patterns that square up to the most stylish and en vogue belles. This print, in fact, has been around, worn in different styles, for more than a century! Plaids date all the way back to the 15th Century, usually associated with tartans and kilts—Scotland's national costume. Originally worn to signify rank among the Scots, the plaid has evolved into the pattern that has suggested the preppy look, as well as this season's favorite mix-and-match essential.

On the Runway
Plaids stalked the runways in an array of hues and style, paired with chic essentials proved to turn this pattern into high-glam look. At the New York Fashion Week, Vivienne Westwood overhauled the kilt while Dolce & Gabbana showcased a tartan paid, double-breasted coat. A Carolina Herrera three-piece pantsuit with fur-trimmed collar and quilted panel vest played perfectly with the pattern. Plaids were also abundant in Preen's Fall 2008 Ready-to-Wear, where plaid never looked so sexy.
