Liza Soberano and BJ Pascual recently teamed up for a fun, '90s-inspired photoshoot. They posted teasers of the outcome before their behind-the-scenes video was published on BJ’s new YouTube channel. The photos featured Liza donning a tweed bodysuit, an all-black grunge look, and a corseted ensemble with glittery boots. Needless to say, Liza looked stunning.
The photos immediately drew comments saying how breathtaking she was, including ones from Maymay Entrata and Moira dela Torre, to name a few. Well, we couldn’t get over the pics ourselves because we’re also still obsessed with the '90s, and we were all the more interested when BJ revealed that Blackpink’s Jennie was also a source of inspiration (it's no secret that Liza is a huge fan). So, we did a little digging and found the exact brands she wore during the shoot, because TBH, we want to cop them stat!
The First Look: Tweed Bodysuit by Rob Ortega
BJ showed his mood board for the shoot in his behind-the-scenes video. His pegs for Liza’s preppy look included collections from Prada (1994) and Miu Miu (1996). He was also inspired by Liv Tyler from the cult classic film Empire Records, where she dons a cropped blue sweater and a plaid skirt.
Even though the bodysuit doesn’t expose Liza’s midriff (that was a big thing in the '90s), it still exudes the same playfulness and feminine flair. Also, this look makes us want to wear stockings with heels again.
The Second Look: Corset from Black Code Manila, Tank Top from Bench, and Boots from Saint Laurent
The second look drew inspiration from photos like Liv Tyler in a white corset and Bella Hadid channeling the same attitude in a corset, longline coat, and distressed jeans. Corsets were part of the era’s “innerwear as outerwear” trend—just think of Madonna in Jeal Paul Gaultier.
The shoot’s stylist, Perry Tabora, layered a white tank from Bench under a corset from Black Code Manila. The latter is known for providing bold outfits for performers like AC Bonifacio and Sarah Geronimo.
The cherry on top of this glam outfit would be the Saint Laurent “crystal boots” from the Fall 2017 collection. They are encrusted with over 3,000 Swarovski crystals and reportedly cost $10,000. These boots were previously worn by big celebrities like Rihanna, Kendall Jenner, and Celine Dion.
The Third Look: Corset by Bonita Penaranda
Liza’s third look was inspired by ‘90s grunge, specifically Marc Jacobs’ Spring 1993 collection for Perry Ellis (his last show for the brand). BJ revealed that Liza wanted to channel “feminine cool”—something she sees in Blackpink’s Jennie. Hence, the addition of a corset to top off the cargo pants and sheer top.
We love how the corset elevates this perennially punk outfit into something more high fashion. The black corset was custom made by Bonita Penaranda who sells stylish corsets through her brand, Just Bonita. While we know that corsets have made a comeback on the Spring 2020 runways (as seen in Burberry and Acne), Liza's wearable look proves that the piece can be worn casually.
