It's a must-have for every girl!

Among the many fashion items in your closet, the little black dress is probably one of the pieces that you get the most wear of. And how could it not be? It’s truly a versatile piece that even bold fashion chameleons wouldn’t shy away from. Think of it as a blank slate that you could wear as is and still look like a million bucks, or something you can have fun with through the power of accessories.

That said, because the little black dress has withstood the test of time, the tendency is to forget the many other ways we could wear it. Need some inspiration yourself? Here are eight ways to wear the LBD for different occasions:

1. Cinch it in the waist for when you want to look polished for work and events.

Here’s something we’ve observed: There’s something about a cinched and well-defined waist that makes any woman look a lot more put together. Bid your collared shirts and dresses adieu and try this styling trick on your black dress instead. Add a little more shape to an A-line dress when you belt it at the waist like Vern Enciso. Not a big fan of accessories?

2. Add a scarf or a longline coat for when you want to travel in style.

Admit it or not, we’re always trying to look our best while traveling in case we chance upon an opportunity for an Instagram-worthy shot. But, since we can’t compromise comfort for style while in transit, wear a comfortable jersey dress and add a patterned scarf for a pop of color and warmth. Need a killer OOTD? Layer a longline coat over a black mini dress and tights like An Estrada did. We especially love the texture of her denim and shearling coat!

3. Try a spaghetti-strap black dress with high cut sneakers for when you want to rock out at a festival.

We know the slip dress can be a little tricky to wear due to its slinky style and sometimes lack of coverage. But if you’re headed to a concert soon, take it out for a spin and wear it with a pair of combat boots or high-cut sneakers for maximum ease with a side of rock and roll vibes.

4. Accessorize with gold accents for when you want to look chic for a Sunday brunch.

Black is already a power color on its own, but if you want to add another element to your look, try adding gold accessories. Black and gold is a classic combo and Chiara Ferragni and Julia Barretto seem to agree. You don’t need to limit yourself with gold chains, though. You can use a bag with gold hardware, too.

5. Choose a black dress with prints or embellishments for attending a wedding.

The black dress can be found in many prints and iterations, so chances are, we own more than just a basic one. If you’re a believer of black being wedding-appropriate, try a black dress with floral prints. We love the look of Pauline Ortega who rocked a backless number with a vintage purse and a pair of Rafa block heels. You can also play up your dress’ textures by opting for a lacey fabric with embellishment and fringe.

6. Wear it with a denim jacket when you want to look cute on casual Fridays.

The denim jacket over black dress combo is a no-brainer style formula that’s proven to be chic but is often overlooked due to the surplus of new trends coming in. But as the new decade kicks in, it’s time to revive this outfit and wear it on days when you need to look casual but still cute. Check out one of our favorite French girls Sabina Socol enjoying a sunny spring day while wearing a simple black midi dress under a denim jacket.

7. Layer it over a white shirt for when you want to look a little trendy.

Incorporate another classic piece like a basic white shirt to your black dress fit for some light layering and extra style points. A basic white tee teamed with a black dress is a surefire way to make basics look more fashion-forward. But if you want to make a trendy black dress look more casual? Well, wear it over a white shirt a la Liz Uy.

8. Slip into a plain black dress and strappy heels for a sexy date night look.

Dressing up for a date can be a debacle especially when you’re not sure whether you want to look low-key or super made up. If you want to look chic but effortless, try a plain mini dress or an off-the-shoulder one to show just a little bit of skin. Slip on a pair of sexy strappy heels and you’re good to go!
