Iconic, comfortable, and redefining how generations view casualwear: the world’s beloved Levi’s 501 jeans, the “original and first-ever blue jean,” turns 140 today, May 20, and we’re more than stoked (admittedly, we’ve got more than our fair share in our wardrobes, reimagined, loved, and worn throughout time). Time Magazine’s “Fashion Item of the 20th Century,” which started out as a project of rivet-pocketed work pants between partners Levi Strauss and tailor Jacob Davis, is now indispensable to most every closet in the world. The pair, which was originally a uniform for pioneers, is now updated to fit trendier seasons: Designs now feature slimmer legs and bottoms, larger pockets, larger waists, and most notably, non-denim, shrink-to-fit fabric (!) for an even more individual take on style, while still retaining the hallmarks and quality of the 501s we all grew up with. Looks like you can take the pioneer out of the uniform, but you can’t take the pioneer out of the brand.
