A red carpet is never complete without a rule-breaker. And for this year's Oscars, that title undoubtedly belongs to Kristen Stewart. Clad in custom Chanel, the Best Actress nominee turned heads in an unapologetically "underdressed" ensemble of a tuxedo jacket, a button-down shirt (that was mostly unbuttoned), and a sleek pair of tiny shorts.
The Spencer star's stylist Tara Swennen shares that the look was a well-deserved break from Kristen's consistent parading in formal garb. They were even debating between pants and shorts, but ultimately went with the latter as per the actress' request. "For us, it was more about creating a look that was authentically hers, as this was her big, special day." Tara told Harper's Bazaar. "She has been wearing lots of gowns, but today was her day to do whatever she wanted."
As a momentous day of Kristen's career, her team wanted her to feel like her best self. "She's worked very hard, for 30 years, to come to this moment, and I just want her to enjoy it and feel unbelievably beautiful and happy, and I want that to radiate," the stylist explained. Whether people end up loving or hating the look is just secondary, Tara added.
Next to being a breath of fresh air on the carpet, the look is simply authentic on Kristen. After all, she's been breaking traditional dress codes in these events for years, so hot pants at the Academy Awards doesn't feel too farfetched.
Just last September, she sported short shorts for Spencer's premiere at the Venice Film Festival and still looked as stylish as ever. But how could you not in some navy Chanel tweed?
Whether Kristen ends up bagging that Best Actress award tonight, she's definitely a winner for making this career highlight moment truly her own.
