In the world of luxury fashion and family traditions, few accessories are as symbolically charged as a watch. For Katya Zóbel de Ayala, turning 18 came with more than just a debut—it came with a vintage Rolex gifted by her father, Fernando Zóbel de Ayala.

A longtime collector, Fernando has an eye for classic, well-crafted pieces. So when it came time to mark Katya’s milestone birthday, he turned to a piece that embodied timelessness in more ways than one: the Rolex Air-King Precision, as revealed in an interview with the watch store Vintage Grail.

For the Zóbel de Ayalas, watches aren’t simply about style or investment; they’re also expressions of memory and meaning. Fernando’s own passion for horology started early, shaped by visits to London’s Portobello Road and a formative gift from his father. “One particular stall had a vintage military watch, which my father could see I really liked. He bought it for me as a gift. I still have it,” he recalled in Vintage Grail's feature.
That same spirit of thoughtful gifting now extends to his children. When Katya turned 18, Fernando marked the moment with a timepiece that would not only commemorate the occasion but also introduce her to the art of collecting. “I don’t want my children to dwell too much on material things,” he said. “But I do want them to appreciate the pieces that bring special memories, like the watches.”

The gift struck the right note. “Being given my first one by my dad definitely brought my interest to a completely new level,” Katya told Vintage Grail. Since then, she’s developed her own collecting style—one that leans into sentimental value over market buzz.
Their dynamic now includes shared conversations on new finds and old favorites. “Katya and I like exchanging thoughts about pieces that we like,” Fernando shared.

First introduced in 1945, the Rolex Air-King was designed as a tribute to RAF pilots and quickly became known for its slim profile and minimalist aesthetic. It’s a model that’s flown under the radar for decades—quietly elegant, endlessly versatile, and recently re-embraced in the era of refined restraint. According to Robb Report, the 34mm case size and time-only functionality make it a collector's favorite for those who value understatement.

Katya’s version belongs to the vintage “Precision” range, likely dating back to the mid-20th century. Stainless steel, unfussy, and impeccably balanced, it represents the kind of quiet luxury that never goes out of style.
Fernando’s personal favorite? A Patek Philippe Nautilus 3700/1. First launched in the 1970s and instantly recognizable thanks to its porthole-shaped bezel and signature dial, the Nautilus has become a defining silhouette in the luxury sports watch category. Often described as both bold and refined, it perfectly suits Fernando’s pared-down yet polished taste.
