As Anton Ego said in the film Ratatouille, “Not everyone can become a great artist; but a great artist can come from anywhere.”
In 1933, Karl Otto Lagerfeldt was born to a German businessman and a Swedish woman in pre-war Germany. He later changed his last name to Lagerfeld by dropping the “t” saying it was “more commercial.” Never in his wildest dreams did he think he would end up working in fashion. As a young lad, his dream was to become a cartoonist, portrait artist, or illustrator. With hands skilled in creating art, he left home at the age of 14 to study drawing and history. Years later he found himself at the helm of Chanel, just a decade after the death of its founder Coco.
