Manila Pop Up, a marketing cooperative headed by Erwan Heussaff, Deejae Paeste, and Mike Concepcion dedicated to shake up the event scene in the country specializing in guerilla marketing, collaborated with Yabu: House of Katsu to bring us Kabukicho, a night of music, art, and food tasting for us to get to know more about Japanese culture.
Set all the way in SM Southmall's Food Street, Manila Pop Up and Yabu put up a dive bar with an authentic Japanese feel. They served a menu specially curated by the guys behind Manila Pop Up: think Menchi Katsu on a stick, Katsu Sliders, Mini Katsudon, and probably our favorite from the wide variety of appetizers, salmon tartare and soft-shell crab maki. The cocktails were a treat too, refreshing mixes that made use of ale, sake, and shochu—Japanese drinks with a modern twist!
The food wasn't the only highlight of the night; there was also a live art session that made use of traditional Japanese brushes with painters flown in all the way from Japan. Yolanda Moon, a local upcoming (and new-found favorite) band, also performed.
We look forward to more collaborations with Manila Pop Up to shake up Manila's scene. Remember, they usually release information about their events just a week prior... Be sure to follow the bulb!
