Joyce Makitalo is profiled in this month's issue of Preview magazine, and in it we see her latest designs: her Summer 2011 collection, Shardboneteeth, as well as some sketches for her cross-inspired collaboration with Celestina.
As usual, the pieces are distinctly Joyce: chunky, colorful, bold, and raw. The Shardboneteeth series was inspired by her antique tamborin pieces, which she piled on and on until she achieved the striking effect she wanted. "I thought to make gigantic ones in jewel tones," she says, "using one of my staple styles called Rondel. My only problem with it is that every time I wear it, it gets bought off my neck. So until now, I do not own one." Quite a good problem to have, we must say.
There are plenty of things going on with her this month; aside from Shardboneteeth and the Cross collection for Celestina, she's busy creating softer designs for her Allegra Hillhouse sub-line for the Charina Sarte boutique, and she's also cooking up plans to start a bag line.
"I love bags, but unlike jewelry, you do not see a wide variety of them available. I have very few evening bags, most of them antique. I am very picky when it comes to evening bags," she says.
Watch out for her first ever collection as it's sure to be as striking as her accessories. "My first bag collection is very Joan of Arc, full-metal jacket fierce. I'm trying to make them into day-to-night pieces."
