Janine Gutierrez Makes a Case for Mismatched Heels at the US Open

A casual achromatic outfit can be anything but basic, as Janine Gutierrez proves with her latest look.

While in New York, the actress took time to watch Alex Eala’s first-round singles match at the US Open, where the Filipina tennis star emerged victorious against the United States’ Mary Stoiana.

For the occasion, Janine opted for a sleek black-and-white ensemble, punctuating the pared-back palette with a playful pair of mismatched heels.

With her hair swept into a neat, slicked-back bun, Janine wore a black longline camisole paired with a white straight-cut mini skirt. She left the fitted top untucked and pulled it low over her hips, breaking up the standard waistline to create the illusion of a longer torso.

In tune with the monochromatic palette, Janine finished the ensemble with a pair of mismatched open-toe heels. She slipped on a white shoe on her left foot, while the same silhouette appeared in black on her right.

Janine’s footwear choice is far from incidental. Over the past three decades, mismatched shoes have come and gone from the trend cycle.

The look was famously popularized by Sarah Jessica Parker in season three of Sex and the City, when her character, the ever-stylish Carrie Bradshaw, wore metallic pink and blue Manolo Blahnik sandals.

Designer houses have similarly revisited the styling approach over the years.

For instance, at Celine’s Spring 2017 presentation, then-creative director Phoebe Philo sent a model down the runway wearing contrasting red-and-white boots. More recently, Jacquemus employed the same visual device for its Autumn/Winter 2026 presentation, where a model appeared on the runway wearing mismatched black-and-white pumps.
