Is the Minimalist Instagram Trend Making You Lazy? Here's how to get out of your rut.

The minimalist Instagram trend is a pleasure to subscribe to, because well, aesthetics. It also doesn’t hurt that every major clothing company is currently catering to the demand and making things easier for all of us.

But trying to fit the monochrome bill may lead to forgetting about the importance of quality clothing and our freedom to curate our own closet. It can also make us lazy in our outfit decisions until the next trend washes up on our shores.

So here’s how to tell if you’re being lazy and restrained with your fashion in the guise of minimalism, and how to shift your gears.

You have a closet full of clothes, but you can barely tell them apart.

It may be an accident, or your newly-formed preference, but the lack of variety in your closet should be acknowledged if it exists. Having a lot of clothes is not the issue here, but your ability to spend your money in a way that maximizes the potential of your wardrobe is. On your next shopping trip, try looking for new silhouettes and textures you don’t have yet, but are interested in.

You have a “uniform.”

Nothing wrong with having a staple outfit, but if your uniform consists of items that start to look worse after every use, even having four sets of that won’t be economical in the long run. Invest in one or two sets that are of higher quality from a reliable brand and check out the difference for yourself.

You spend too much time maintaining a color scheme.

All of us already know about the holy chicness of monochrome clothing, but obsessing over having only black, white, and nude items is a limitation you don’t need. Every color in the color wheel can look clean and simple. We promise you, the minimalist police won’t come for you if you have an orange sports bra in your otherwise monochrome closet.

Most of your clothes are from the same fast-fashion, foreign name brands.

Take a break from these brands and start thrifting or supporting local designers who are also in love with the trend. Almost every brand is on Instagram now so accessibility is not an issue. Trust us, you’ll end up spending the same amount of money for unique pieces than you would usually spend on a department store trip.

Take our word for it, the minimalist Instagram trend isn’t going away anytime soon. So while it’s still here, savor it. Make it your own.
