Denim jeans are closet must-haves—they go well with most of our clothes and they're just so unbelievably comfy! But in order to snap that perfect denim OOTD, one must be able to find a pair that fits like a glove. To help you, Preview reached out to celebrity stylists Celina Dayacap, Myrrh Lao To, Kimi Yap, and Cath Sobrevega who work with numerous designers and celebs like Kathryn Bernardo, Ylona Garcia, Anne Curtis, Bela Padilla, and more. Below, they share the tips and tricks you should keep in mind when buying a pair of jeans.
1. Fit and comfort are everything.
Celina: "The main thing I always consider when choosing a good pair of jeans is the wearer's body type. Unfortunately, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants gave us unrealistic expectations on jeans. Different styles of jeans work differently on different body types so it's good to know the wearer's assets to highlight and areas to conceal."
Myrrh: "I always consider comfort and ease for my clients whenever I get them jeans. They should be able to really move around in it while it hugs them on the proper areas."
Kimi: "When selecting a pair of jeans, it's important to know the body type of your client so you can choose a pair that will fit her perfectly, and this is ultimately what matters at the end of the day."
Cath: "I make sure the fit is right, that the waist is really cinched because this will show off the curves of the client."
2. If you don't love it, don't buy it.
Myrrh says to try on "a couple of options until we find the perfect one." Remember that if you didn't love it in the store's fitting room, then there's no chance you'll love it at home either!
3. Take note of the cut and proportions.
Cath notes the importance of "[getting] the proportions right." Not everyone can pull off a pair of high-waisted jeans or a low rise one, so you ought to know what suits you best. And when it comes to sizing, don't just stick to one size across brands. Remember that jeans are a temperemental fabric, and size could vary depending on several factors.
4. The little details count.
Celina: "The type of denim wash is important, too. It is much trickier to pull off light denim jeans, and dark jeans can be a good slimming technique. Lastly, raw denim jeans can look bulky and uncomfortable as it takes a while to 'break in' but they can be good quality investments in the long run."
Kimi: "In terms of the color and style, it will really depend on the whole look, but if you want a pair of jeans that you can wear often, I would go with the dark wash type because it's flattering on anyone and goes with almost anything."
5. Know what you like but don't be afraid to explore.
Cath shares that you should wear whatever style you're comfortable in. It's better to go for flattering cuts instead of following a trend that poorly fits you. However, you shouldn't box yourself in one type. There are many types of denim jeans that can flatter your shape. You just have to be patient in trying them on.
