NEW YORK - On her way to the Boom Boom Room in the Meatpacking District, Sarah Jessica Parker stepped out of her car, and like a scene out of Sex and The City, gingerly navigated the cobblestone streets in her heels. Like Carrie, she was wearing a ball skirt when Style Bible spotted her en route to our own night out. As the style icon turns 50 today (can you believe it?), she remains as immaculately dressed. Herewith, 6 lessons gleaned from The SM Store endorser’s fab, fab forties.

1. Have fun with accessories.

SJP is so good at pairing modest silhouettes – a shift, or even this little black dress – with young and fun accessories. Think: Chinese takeout purses and Chanel backpacks. Black leather makes both womanly enough.

2. Establish a signature.

Four decades in, you must already have an answer to the question: What do I feel prettiest in? Every style icon has a thing—and for this Oscar de la Renta muse, it’s polka dots.

3. Yes, you can wear pumped up kicks.

They’re perfect for hitting the gym and/or running around with kids.

4. Say yes to the Date Night Dress.

Happy coupleslike Sarah Jessica and Matthew Broderickdesignate one night of the week as date night. When that happens, wear sparkle or sheer the age appropriate way. That is, just a slice.

5. One word, three syllables: anti-fit.

Body con is not a good look in your 40s. But a swingy velvet skirt or a checked overcoat? Yes please.

6. When all else fails, add a pop of pink.

Elsa Schiaparelli would be proud.
