The luxury brand formally launches its boutique in Manila.
HermÈs Manila The luxury brand formally launches its boutique in Manila.

Only a handful of names are truly synonymous with high fashion, luxury, and unparalleled craftsmanship. Hermès is undoubtedly one of them, with its rich history dating back to the early 1800s, its dedication to artisanal perfection, and its roster of elite clients who have subscribed to the matchless prestige that the brand carries until today.

In December of last year, the Manila retail scene was blessed with the opening of this venerated brand in Greenbelt 3. Not only did this opening intensify the already frenzied holiday retail rush among Manila's beau monde, but it also spoke of our society's sustained inclination towards luxury and sophistication, despite the global economic downturn.

Manila has its fashion priorities straight, and its continued demand for high-end retail indulgence obviously has not gone unnoticed by the powers that be.

Jordyn Hill of Hermès Manila shares her insights on the store's opening and tells us how the brand has been doing here so far.

WHAT PROMPTED THE OPENING OF THE BRANCH IN MANILA?
It is a well-known fact that our market has evolved significantly over the recent years. The typical Filipino luxury consumer is now a well-traveled individual familiar with fashion trends worldwide.

Needless to say, this slim but strong upper market segment has increasingly become more sophisticated, discriminating and demanding as more choices become available to them locally. Their tastes, preferences and expectations have always been a key factor in shaping our business decisions, thus it is within this landscape that we have finally decided to bring in Hermès—a brand truly in a caliber of its own when it comes to prestige, craftsmanship and heritage.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE RESPONSE OF THE MANILA MARKET SINCE YOUR OPENING LAST YEAR?
As I mentioned earlier, we feel that the luxury market in Manila is sophisticated enough to welcome such an iconic brand as Hermès. As a matter of fact, actual performance from day one has clearly shown that Filipinos not just welcomed it—they embraced it. This only proves that regardless of economic climate, discerning clients will never shortchange themselves when it comes to quality and craftsmanship and we have proven that true with the overwhelming response since we opened.

DO FILIPINO CONSUMERS HAVE ANY SPECIFIC SHOPPING QUIRKS? ANY NOTICEABLE AESTHETIC PREFERENCES?
Hermès is a global luxury lifestyle brand and the common thing about clients of this brand the world over is that their standards are very high; they will never compromise. The aesthetic of Hermès revolves around the brand's identity of premiere functionality and that is what draws the clients to the brand. The same is true for the Filipino clients.

WHAT ARE THE STORE'S BEST-SELLING ITEMS? ITS MOST IN DEMAND PRODUCTS?
Hermès has a wide selection of categories that different client profiles seek. It is quite expected that the much sought after Birkin and Kelly are in high demand. But beyond these two iconic bags, the range of other products offered such as silks, belts, watches, jewelry, as well as home and baby items are also well received by the market.

Hermès is particularly known most for its high-quality leather products, and so our other bags, diaries, and small leather goods unquestionably appeal to the market.

HOW LONG IS THE WAITING LIST FOR THE BIRKIN?
It takes about six months depending on availability of color, leather, etc.

HOW DOES HERMÈS AIM TO DISTINGUISH ITSELF FROM OTHER LUXURY RETAIL BRANDS TO PROCURE AND MAINTAIN THE PATRONAGE OF FILIPINO CONSUMERS?
Hermès is in itself a distinguishable brand and it does not view itself in competition with other fashion houses. It has always been Hermès' mantra to develop the finest quality products and we believe once it is there, the patronage follows.

WHAT IS THE MANAGEMENT'S ULTIMATE DREAM FOR HERMÈS MANILA?
Right now, we are still at the stage of trying to appropriately supply the market's demand. We believe the same is true all over the world. However, our products take time to produce because of the level of quality and craftsmanship the artisans put into the production of each piece. For now, we look forward to bringing better offerings to the market so our discerning Filipino consumers encounter the same Hermès experience they get anywhere in the world, and that we are truly at par with the standards set by the brand internationally.
