Review: I Tried to Wear Hello Kitty to Office and Here's What Happened Yup, it's possible!

At the mention of Hello Kitty, we're often whisked back to our childhood when we used to collect countless of items with this Sanrio character's face like there's no tomorrow. And quite often, the thought of Hello Kitty is stowed exactly there...the past. This, however, does not apply to me; to this day I continue to collect merchandise and purchase bags and shoes with Hello Kitty's iconic face unapologetically emblazoned across them. And if you dare ask, yes, I do wear them out.

In fact, anyone who truly knows me can attest that I am obsessed with love Hello Kitty. Call it a quirk, but it's something that I haven't grown out of even as an adult. So when I found out that Italian brand Furla partnered with Sanrio to produce a grown-up version of Hello Kitty bags, your girl was over the moon. Luckily, my editors assigned me to give the bags a test run. And for someone who owns quite a few Sanrio bags, the task sounded more like a fun experience than a challenge.

Current Condition:

As you already know, I'm no stranger to wearing Hello Kitty items. From tees, to bags, to sneakers, I have it all. However, when I was younger, I was more carefree in wearing them out as my childhood wardrobe allowed room for such quirky items. Fast forward to the present, and my new challenge is incorporating them into my adult wardrobe and making it appropriate for an office setting.

How I Used Them:

Day 1

I got carried away during the first day of the challenge and wore an all-pink ensemble since it's a color that I associate with Hello Kitty. I reached for pieces with lady-like details like black ruffles, pleats, and dainty slingback shoes. I highlighted the femininity of the outfit by sticking to two solid colors. With its overall simplicity, the white bag—slung across the body—became the cute focal point of the ensemble. If I wasn't going to work, I'd wear this look out to brunch with my girlfriends.

Day 2

Today I challenged myself to wear something more office-appropriate, and to me that meant tailored trousers and a white top. I tried to give my look a fresh spin by choosing to wear a pussy bow blouse underneath a boxy cropped top. This look is my favorite. Wearing the Hello Kitty bag with it instantly made the outfit more interesting. I liked how the Hello Kitty reference on the white bag went seamlessly with my look because it matched the color of my top. The bag's gold chain also added a level of sophistication to the look.

Day 3

On my third day, I think I was able to get out of my head (who else overthinks their outfits?) and chose to wear a relaxed, more me outfit in the form of my trusty mom jeans. Since I was off to the office today, I wore a more tailored top to pair with my casual denim jeans and finished the look with a pair of heeled loafers. As I slung the bag over my head, I realized that it felt more like a normal purse instead of a novelty item or a collectible. The dainty bag, I surmised, required no special effort to style and incorporate to the rest of my outfit. If anything, it balanced the whole look (and even matched my disco earrings).

Day 4

I pushed myself to make Hello Kitty work with track pants and boots. I think the ensemble looked well put-together because I worked with a color palette. I used the printed Hello Kitty bag to match my blue bottoms and shoes. I broke the monotony with my glittery silver top, which also kept my outfit from looking too sporty.

Day 5

I think the ultimate challenge was how to make the Hello Kitty purse work from desk to dinner or to a night out. And this look was my answer to that. I matched the blue bag with fringed jeans (to keep the outfit from looking too formal, as most structured totes often have that effect when worn) and chose a sheer metallic dress to bring out the gold details of the bag. I kept my clothes in solid hues to highlight the floral print of the bag, too. From afar, you wouldn't even think it was a Hello Kitty bag, right?

Conclusion:

I did this challenge thinking it would be an easy task, but it was quite a challenge since I had to dress up, well, like an adult who wanted to be taken seriously. As it turns out, incorporating your favorite childhood character into your work wardrobe isn't a problem if you know how style it right. In my case, the Furla collection was the perfect choice to get me into wearing Hello Kitty again; the pieces were especially designed with adult Hello Kitty fans in mind. This was evident in the bags' structure, print, and even its hardware. I guess the real takeaway here is to not fear rekindling your penchant for fashion nostalgia. Instead, choose pieces that give a more subtle and polished reminder of the things you loved in your childhood.
