This will change everything you think you know about Hello Kitty. Because apparently, the world’s most beloved cat is, well, not a cat.
Yup, you read that right. According to Sanrio, the company behind the iconic character, Hello Kitty is in fact not what everyone assumed it to be. This revelation was uncovered by anthropologist Christine Yano, who was curating a Hello Kitty exhibit at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles. After wading through Hello Kitty coin banks, purses, toys, and everything purr-y, Sanrio approved all but one shocking detail—Hello Kitty is not a cat. And to quote, “She’s a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat.”
If that surprised you, well, get this: Hello Kitty even has a pet cat of her own named Charmmy Kitty. At least now we know, right? Tweet us your reactions @stylebibleph
