Filipino designer Happy Andrada adds yet another plume to her many-feathered, award-winning hat. She recently won the Miami Beach International Fashion Week's Emerging Designer of the Year, where she competed against hundreds of entries from 25 different countries. The La Salle College International, London College of Fashion, and Central Saint Martins graduate is the first Filipina to win the award.
Happy submitted two of her latest collections to the competition, 2084 and Triangular Evolution. 2084 is her "vision of the future," seen through an "aesthetic of interplanetary proportions"—origami folds and meticulous pleating in piña abaca, abaca lace, Philippine duponi combined with denim, organza, tafetta, Thai silk, and charmeuse in shades of gray and black. Triangular Evolution, meanwhile, "showcas[es] the journey of a triangle being used as different details of an ensemble." The collection is the ready-to-wear antithesis of 2084's avant-garde stylings, with its mix-and-match separates peppered with luxe details.
Miami Beach International Fashion Week is the longest-standing fashion event in Miami, and has a reputation for showcasing the works of up-and-coming designers from all over the globe. As the winner of the Emerging Designer of the Year award, Happy took home a cash prize and a mentoring session with Mercedes Gonzales, president of the Global Purchasing Group, a company that implements retail strategies gor merchants and new designers.
